Родин (Рыгина) Лика Сергеевна

Дата рождения: 15 сентября 1973 г.

Кандидат социологических наук

(updated October 16, 2013)

Background

In 1996 Lika Rodin (Rygina) obtained a magister degree in psychology from Saratov State University (Russia) with the thesis Risk Factors for Students’ Psychological Well-Being Measured on Different Stages of Education. At start of the professional career, Lika worked as a psychologist at a mental hospital, specializing in patopsychological expertise. During the period of 1999-2007 Lika cooperated as a counsellor and a manager of an outreach team with a non-governmental organization for people with problems of drug addiction, HIV/AIDS and sexual workers. In 2006 Lika obtained her doctoral degree in sociology. Her PhD thesis Gender Discourse Production in the ‘Field’ of Journalism: The Case of Russian Local Press (in Russian) explored the mechanisms behind the construction of public rhetorics on the problem of gender equality in post-Soviet Russia. Her interest in analysis of social hierarchies further resulted in a number of research projects, including the studies “Gender Regimes of the Modern Social Movements” (2006, University of Iowa, USA) and “Towards a Biotechnological Self: Cyborg Imagery in Social Science and Popular Art” (Polish Academy of Sciences. 2007/8, Poland).

Teaching experience

As an assistant lecturer, Lika was leading and co-leading social-psychological courses at the Department of Social Anthropology and Social Work, Saratov State Technical University (Russia), including Conflictology, Organizational Psychology, Social Management, Sociology and Methods and Techniques of Social Studies. Later on, in 2011, she participated as a guest lecturer in the course Psychological Ill-Health given at the Department of Social Work, University of Gothenburg (Sweden).

Research interests

Social aspects of chronic illnesses and disability; social policy and alternative social support services for disadvantaged social groups; mass media and social problems; gender aspects of social movements; new technologies; body politics and cultural representations; gender, nationalism and globalization in the popular culture; social precarity and labour social movement.

Current research projects

1. A study-in-progress - (In)voluntary Nomads: Job Precarity in Creative and Knowledge Industries - is aimed at examining and conceptualizing on structural and individual levels the phenomenon of self-chosen (“reflexive”) precarization in the sphere of non-material production (communication/ IT/ R&D sectors). As a cross-national analysis, the study is thought to look at similarities and differences between East-European post-socialist countries (Russia and Poland) and Scandinavian social democratic societies (Sweden/Denmark).

2. ”I Wish I Could Take Your Pain”: The Individual Drama of Female Hairloss and Self-help Communities in Sweden (2012). The project was carried out with financial support from Skaraborgsinstitutet in Skövde. It explored self-support and self-organization of women with an appearance-altering medical condition (alopecia) in Sweden, and their relations with the health care system. Different types of interviews were used for data collection with a focus on alopecia patients’ identity development in relation to the medical approach to alopecia and institutionalization of social work.

3. A review of an anthology Transforming Gendered Well-Being in Europe: The Impact of Social Movements (ed Woodward, Bonvin and Renom), 2012 for the journal Labour Market and Working.
